Wave Energy Prize @ the US Department of Energy

As a second-year AAAS Fellow at the US Department of Energy, I am working in the Wind and Water Power Technologies Office in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy as the Technical Lead on the Wave Energy Prize. The Prize is a two-year design-build-test challenge for wave energy converters (WECs) to spur innovation in energy capture efficiency from waves and dramatically drive down cost of these devices.

The Prize will use ground-breaking metrics to evaluate WEC performance across a spectrum of device types, along with new frameworks to evaluate the technoeconomic viability of WECs at low technology readiness levels.

All in all, $4.5 million dollars will be given out to competitors as prize winnings and support for testing their radical WEC ideas, including at the nation’s premier wave testing facility.

Stay tuned for the launch of the prize in April 2015.
